Great Priory Barn Essex

The Venue

Essex barn function venueDuring the reign of William 1 the Panfield Priory was a cell of St Stephens Abbey at Caen in Normandy. It later became a Priory of Benedictine monks attached to St Etienne at Caen. During the reign of Henry 111 c1260 the barley barn was built. It is a Grade 11* listed building and the adjacent wheat barn, granary and farmhouse are all Grade 11 listed. With no modern structures on the site, an unusual journey back in time is easy to imagine. Nearby there are horses, sheep and cattle to add to this illusion.

This is not a commercial wedding venue in the usual sense, we only have one function per week, in any month of the year. We do not have a licence to conduct the official wedding ceremony, but we do allow pre-arranged unofficial ceremonies in our nearby woodland. It is also possible to arrange the use of the farmhouse garden for unofficial ceremonies, or of course as a background for photography.

Functions

This is a rustic and original venue, although we have discreetly added the necessary requirements of modern life, such as a kitchen and cloakrooms. We can also accommodate additional catering requirements in the adjacent timber framed wheat barn.

Wedding venueThere is space for 100 to 130 people – depending on the seating plan and table type – to sit down and eat. There is also adjacent space for a marquee if required. We have rectangular 6’ x 2’ 6’’ tables and timber chairs, which are included in our standard price. However any other tables and chairs can be supplied, although this will entail a supplementary charge.

Hiring

We offer to hire the venue only, usually over a three day period. This gives you the time and freedom to arrange the catering, decoration and any other details to suit your own requirements. We make no corkage charge. We will endeavour of course to provide any assistance possible to make your function special.

If you are interested in hiring the barn, would like to arrange to view it, or have any questions, please call 07796 691254 or contact us by email.
